Cat Rescue Paused in Chicago due to Relocation
Cat Rescue Paused in Chicago due to Relocation

Chicago’s harsh winters can be deadly for animals living on the streets. While Jheniru has rescued other animals in need, including dogs and rabbits, our primary focus has been cats. Stray and outdoor cats are often left outside in freezing temperatures because of the misconception that they are better equipped to survive the cold. The reality is that many suffer from hypothermia, frostbite, and even freeze to death.

Between November 2025 and February 2026, 200 cats were rescued from the freezing streets of Chicago. Despite facing severe conditions including pregnant cats, nursing mothers, illness, and heavy flea infestations, every single animal received complete medical treatment and successfully found safe, loving homes.

To protect cats that could not immediately be brought indoors, 120 heated outdoor shelters were distributed to volunteer homes throughout Chicago, ensuring vulnerable animals had a safe place to stay warm during the harshest months. We were the only ones in Chicago giving free cat houses.

We exposed critical flaws in the municipal shelter system including surrender restrictions that left animals to suffer while fighting for accountability through advocacy letters and social media awareness. These efforts contributed to the appointment of a new Executive Director at Chicago Animal Care and Control in May 2026.

Following the relocation out of Chicago we provided traps and essential resources to individual community members to help them continue independent rescue work and prove that grassroots action makes a lasting difference.

We rescued five outdoor dogs, an injured bunny, and other wildlife while distributing free cat food and providing round the clock support to individuals in need. By personally delivering adopted pets with starter supplies and collaborating with generous local shops. But most importantly, proved that one person can spark a profound community impact.
While this project is closed, any donation towards it goes directly to independent individuals making a difference in Chicago. Your contributions help provide heated outdoor cat houses throughout the city in the winter and directly support independent rescuers working on the streets.
